Buckingham's presentation will provide youngsters with an insider's view on the entertainment industry, how to deal with agents and others in the industry as well as how to develop their talents in singing, songwriting and performing. "The kids that attend her presentation will get a more realistic view of how to start a career and how to maintain success in the industry," said Jan Palen, senior librarian.

Pioneer Medical offers bone screenings

DOWNEY-Osteoporosis affects more than 29 million American men and women. The consequences of the disease are devastating and commonly result in fractures to the hip, spine and wrists. In an effort to detect early signs of bone deterioration, Pioneer Medical Group of Bellflower held a free bone density screening for the community on Jan. 24.

The simple procedure uses a small X-ray machine to capture the image of the patient's left foot. A physician can then determine the amount of bone density and any potential risk for osteoporosis. The patient and physician can now take appropriate measures to slow the onset of osteoporosis. The test's usefulness is not only measured by its ability to detect the disease, but to also predict the chance of a fracture in the future and to determine the rate of bone loss.

Pioneer Medical Group is owned and operated by the more than 50 physicians located in Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Huntington Park, Long Beach, Pico Rivera and South Gate. PMG prides itself on the multilingual staff, after-hours access and their one-on-one doctor patient relationship. Downey Regional Medical Center is Pioneer Medical Group's hospital of choice.

Ronald McDonald helps local hospital

WHITTIER-Every 24 hours, 12 individuals are diagnosed with diabetes. In California alone, the disease is the sixth leading cause of death among Latinos; and research shows that Type 2 diabetes is one of the main chronic illnesses affecting children at increasingly harmful rates.

To help address this concerning epidemic, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California recently awarded a $24,884 grant to Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital to establish a Children and Adolescent Diabetes Program based out of its mobile medical unit, Care Force One.

Care Force One

Care Force One provides vaccinations, basic healthcare services, and health education to low-income, at-risk pediatric and senior populations, free of charge. With the newly instituted Children and Adolescent Diabetes Program, the 36-foot mobile health clinic will provide free diabetes testing and diagnosis, physician consultations, and family education and support for disadvantaged and underserved populations, especially Latinos, on whom the disease takes its biggest toll.

The treatment also helps children and their parents address the emotional impact of the disease's physical manifestations, particularly obesity. During its first year, Care Force One and its staff aim to provide diabetes testing and care for more than 700 at-risk children and adolescents within four different school districts.

Regional hospital

Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital is a non-profit regional hospital and health center delivering healthcare services to southeastern Los Angeles County and portions of the San Gabriel Valley and Orange County.

"Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California is pleased to support a project that has a physical presence in and serves the communities that are in vital need of medical attention," said Julia Sanchez, local McDonald's owner and operator and an RMHCSC representative. "It is our hope that with the increased care we will help make a difference in the well-being of hundreds of children and their families."
