Young interest

To the Editor:
I am a teen resident of Downey and I am upset that the new Downtown Downey is mostly for older Downey residents. I feel that there is nothing for kids my age or younger to do or see in Downtown Downey. There is nothing for kids to do but sit around and be bored while their parents go through the shops and restaurants.

I think there should be one or two shops for kids or maybe a place where they can hang out with friends. Some of those shops could be an ice cream parlor or an arcade. Downey spent thousands of dollars to build Downtown Downey for people of all ages to come and enjoy it. So far, the only people I see there are the people who work in the shops and maybe two or three couples looking for something to do. We should have a place where we live to go every day instead of going somewhere else.

Jobs or taxes

To the Editor:
Regarding taxes, Democrats say the Republicans favor the "rich," knowing a large percentage own businesses. When Reagan reduced taxes, businesses were able to hire more people, and sell more products, as a result we enjoyed the greatest economy boom in history. Promptly after Clinton was elected, he punished the "rich" by increasing their taxes 208 percent, from 19 percent to 39.6 percent, and we saw a large increase in companies moving to other "friendlier" countries, or filing bankruptcy. As a result thousands of Americans lost their jobs, and almost everything we purchase now is made in another country by foreign labor.

On the premise, "if you ain't got it, you can't spend it," Bush is following Reagan's example and is promising a small tax cut to give you and I more money to spend on things we need, and encourage business owners to hire more people, both of which will give the economy a boost. Democrat's Tom Dashle is against a tax cut, if government needs more money just raise the taxes. In the next two years we will hear both arguments, and we must decide if we want to stimulate the economy by reducing taxes to put more money into circulation, or sit back and allow the Democrats to solve their money problems by raising our taxes.
