As preparation for the upcoming regular season, the "Rebels" under coaches Sergio Hidalgo and Rumy Lopez, along with team manager Yolanda Hidalgo, came up with some spectacular play in sweeping the tournament.
They took the first game 5-0 versus the host city's team; they then downed Hotspurs Red, the state bronze medal winners last season by 4-1; trounced the South Bay Gunners 4-2; then downed San Juan Capistrano 3-1 in the title game.
The "Rebels" include Sergio Hidalgo; Brandon Hitchcock; Dennis Rustrian (team captain); Erick Segovia; Craig Barrios, Brandon Barrios; Ernesto Amador; Azcar Mariscal; Leo Castillo; Justin Hinkle; Christian "Asprilla" Cruz; Scott Dwelley; Ramon Casas (goalie); Eric Araya; and Jobani Sanabria.
He tabs a core of returning players he hopes will lead the younger newcomers. These include Rajaee Barnett, a fine linebacker and fullback; Andre Adams, a tight end; and Rigo Pena, a quarterback. Then there's Sergio Robleto at strong safety; and Gabriel Hollingsworth at center. Warhurst feels he has enough talent to hold things together until his younger players gain needed experience.
Who does he have to beat?
Dominguez, coming off a championship season, with star quarterback Jason Thomas leading the attack, is everybody's favorite to repeat as San Gabriel Valley League Champions.
Warhurst knows that on paper his young Vikings don't compare to the powerful Dominguez Dons. But he also knows intangibles mean a lot.
Warhurst teams consistently play "over their head" in big games, demonstrating a lot of heart. If Dominguez gets too pumped up over their press clippings and Downey's youngsters develop enough by the Dominguez game Nov. 7, there just might be a surprise.
Meanwhile, Downey faces a tough opponent in its opener Friday, Sept. 12, at Huntington Beach.
